Stay Safe This Summer

With the Summer break fast approaching, we thought you should be reminded of the dangers of "going for a dip" whether on holiday abroad or in the U.K.

Swimming in open water to cool off during these hot Summer days sounds inviting, but unless properly supervised can be very dangerous. (Especially if alcohol is involved.)
1) River “traffic' may not expect swimmers and can be dangerous
2) Unpredictable Water Conditions: Unlike swimming pools, open water environments are subject to natural elements that can change rapidly. Factors such as wind, weather changes, and underwater currents can significantly alter conditions without warning. This unpredictability can lead to dangerous situations for swimmers.
3) Cold Water Shock and Hypothermia: Sudden immersion in cold water can cause cold water shock, leading to involuntary gasping, rapid breathing, and panic. Prolonged exposure can result in hypothermia, which is life-threatening if not addressed promptly. Symptoms include shivering, numbness, and confusion.
4) Drowning Risks: Drowning is a significant danger in open water, with many incidents occurring due to fatigue, cramps, or being swept away by currents. It is essential to swim with others and in areas monitored by lifeguards whenever possible.
5) Limited Visibility: Open water often has poor visibility due to murky conditions or underwater obstacles, making it difficult to see potential hazards such as rocks, debris, or aquatic plants. This can also hinder rescuers from locating swimmers in distress.
6) Infection Risks: Open water contains bacteria and pathogens, increasing the risk of infections. Swimmers should be cautious about water quality and avoid swimming with open cuts or after heavy rainfall, which can elevate pathogen levels.
Please enjoy yourselves, but only swim in controlled lifeguarded areas and keep yourselves safe.
Looking forward to seeing you all back on poolside in September.
Don't forget to be awesome !
